Choosing and Planting Perennials

If you’ve been growing a vegetable garden for a while, you might be feeling slightly disgruntled at how plain it is to look at. I too began my gardening career with a vegetable garden, but I decided that it wasn’t quite as pleasing to look at as I would have liked. I heard from a friend that the use of perennial flowers could be a great way to liven up my garden without adding any extra work for me.

Walkway Annuals

You can create gorgeous garden color almost instantly, simply by planting some annual flowers. And one of the best places to plant these, is along the walkway or sidewalk that leads up to your home’s front door.

My favorite annuals to put on the walkway are Vincas. These survive and thrive quite well in very hot, direct sunlight. They also have gorgeous, large, showy and colorful flower blooms, which helps spruce up my yard from the drab and dreary winter look quickly.

Plan Ahead with Perennials

Perennial flowers are a wonderful investment for anyone who wants to have blooms and greenery many years in a row. Where as annuals only last for one season, perennials will come back on their own several years in a row.

Perennials sometimes take longer to grow and bloom, but once they’ve started they’re wonderful because all you have to do is water and weed them… you don’t have to go buy and plant something new every year.

Store Bought Container Plants

When you buy a container of plants at the store, it’s usually not a good idea to simply leave the arrangement as is for too long. Most store bought container plants have already outgrown the container they were planted in. The stores want these to look full and lush, because they sell better that way. But unfortunately they don’t live well that way.

Since the container is over crowded, the plants have little room to breath let alone grow. So if left in the container as you bought them, the plants are likely to die not long after you’ve brought them home.
